- Description: Ffyona Campbell is an English long-distance walker. Between 1983 and October 1994 she completed four consecutive long-distance walks covering approximately 32,000 km (20,000 miles) across four continents over 11 years: the length of Britain (1983), the United States from New York to Los Angeles (1984-1986), Australia from Sydney to Perth (1988), and Africa from Cape Town to Tangier (1991-1993), followed by Europe back to John o' Groats. She raised £180,000 for charities including Raleigh International and Survival International. In 1994 she was hailed as the first woman to have walked around the world. In 1996, however, she admitted in her book The Whole Story that during the American leg she had accepted approximately 1,000 miles of rides in her support vehicle; Guinness World Records subsequently withdrew her associated titles. She later rewalked the American section to complete it legitimately

It was a special time, an envelope of peace in a war-weary Europe. The 1930s presented a unique opportunity for three wandering Swiss horsemen to journey across a recovering continent, a chance to see the last remnants of nineteenth century village life before it was swept away forever by the horrors of the Second World War.
