Museum of Travel and Tourism is a virtual museum dedicated to travel and tourism, founded in 2016. It began as a research platform focused on the biographies of women and men travelers from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and has gradually expanded to include contemporary journeys. As of August 31, 2025, the catalog contains 951 globetrotter profiles, and the site has surpassed one million visitors since its launch.
The idea springs from a passion for travel and for the many forms this social practice can take. The allure of feats narrated today on YouTube and other channels resonates with experiences not so distant in time, undertaken under often demanding conditions that required self-reliance, ingenuity, and resilience.
We curate content with close attention to sources (precise citations, links to Wikidata) to offer an experience that is accessible yet methodologically rigorous, despite a subject that is fluid and difficult to delimit. Today the site brings together hundreds of records and references, and continues to grow thanks to community submissions and collaborations with enthusiasts, scholars, archives, and institutions.
We are looking beyond the digital realm: we are exploring exhibition formats and public programs to turn Museum of Travel and Tourism into a cultural project with a tangible presence of its own. Interested in joining as a partner, curator, or content donor?
