- Description: Lady Anne Blunt, niece of the poet Lord Byron and a student of the art critic John Ruskin, distinguished herself through her travels in the Middle East. She is regarded as one of the first Western women to travel in central Arabia, reaching the city of Ha’il and crossing regions that were still little known. Through her travel writings, she provided detailed observations that contributed to the ethnographic and geographic knowledge of the Arabian Peninsula. Voyage en Arabie recounts the journey she undertook with her husband, the poet Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, in the Najd region (present-day Saudi Arabia) during the winter of 1878–1879. Lady Anne (1837–1917), daughter of the Earl of Lovelace and granddaughter of Lord Byron, was also known as an accomplished horsewoman and breeder of Arabian horses. The book was first published in London in 1881 by John Murray under the title A Pilgrimage to Nejd; it was written by Lady Anne and edited with the support of Wilfrid Blunt. The French translation by Léopold Derôme (1833–1889) appeared in Paris the following year. Derôme, a man of letters and bibliophile, added a substantial introduction in which he proposed an interpretation of Bedouin societies based in part on the Blunts’ observations. During their journey, the Blunts traveled with nomadic tribes of the Najd as far as Baghdad and stayed with the Al Rashid dynasty in their fortified capital of Ha’il, rivals of the Saudi clan. At one point, Wilfrid Blunt even considered serving as a diplomatic intermediary to the emir. Lady Anne paid particular attention to the horses she encountered, assessing and riding them during excursions, including hunting trips. The book is illustrated by Gaston Vuillier, based on Lady Anne’s sketches and descriptions, with engravings produced by Charles Barbant
