That year, he completed a journey of 1'136 miles (1'828 km) between Melbourne and Sydney in nine days. He set off towards Adelaide (1'138 miles, 1'831 km) in 1946, arriving in eight days. The following year, he covered 6'000 miles (9'650 km) in 56 days passing through Adelaide, Darwin, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney. In 1948, he focused on the Melbourne-Perth route (round trip), totaling 4'500 miles (7'250 km). In 1954, marathon cyclist Ernie Old completed an 80-day bicycle ride, averaging 80 miles per day and finishing on his 80th birthday in Albert Park in Melbourne. This was just one of his remarkable feats – he also served in two wars, patented several inventions and made Prime Minister Robert Menzies an offer he almost couldn't refuse.

- Description: Born in 1938 in Manche, France, Bernard Ollivier is a French journalist and writer. Upon retirement, following a deep personal crisis, he walked the Way of St James from Paris to Santiago de Compostela. This experience led him, at the age of 60, to undertake a 12,000 km (7,500 miles) walk from Istanbul to Xi'an, China, along the Silk Road, completed in four separate trips between 1999 and 2002, with long stays at home in France between each leg. The journey is recounted in the four-volume series Longue marche, which won the Prix Joseph-Kessel in 2001. The success of the books allowed Ollivier to found the association Seuil, a non-profit organisation that reintegrates young people in difficulty through long-distance walking

The concept of Olsen's world run originated as a suggestion made in 2001 by Olsen to David Blaikie, who published it with an invitation for comments on his website ultramarathonworld.com. Olsen suggested that, without taking sides in then-current controversies in the ultra-running world, a professionally organized world run would be a "constructive" and "truly sportsman[like]" response to widespread ultrarunner community skepticism and discussion concerning Robert Garside's world run, which had been in progress since 1997 but was viewed with great skepticism by Blaikie and many ultra-runners and had not yet been authenticated by Guinness at the time.
