- Description: Wiebe Wakker is a Dutch adventurer, keynote speaker and sustainable mobility advocate. In 2016, as a graduation project for his industrial design studies, he conceived the "Plug Me In" project: to drive from the Netherlands to Sydney, Australia, entirely in an electric car, with no money, relying solely on strangers for electricity, food and accommodation. On 15 March 2016 he departed Amsterdam in a retrofitted Volkswagen station wagon named "The Blue Bandit", powered by an electric motor with a range of approximately 200 km per charge. His route was determined entirely by the offers he received on his website, taking him through Norway, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, India, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. Over 1,119 days he crossed 33 countries and covered 95,000 km (59,000 miles), spending only $300 on electricity - mostly in outback Australia - while over 350 people hosted him and nearly 2,000 people from 45 countries offered assistance. He arrived at the Sydney Opera House on 7 April 2019, setting the world record for the longest journey ever made in an electric car. His arrival was covered by CNN, BBC, NOS News and National Geographic and broadcast in over 40 countries. The Blue Bandit ran on its original retrofitted motor throughout, suffering only one flat tyre. He subsequently continued travelling without flying, including a journey from Amsterdam to Dubai by public transport and a crossing of Mauritania by freight train
