There were no rules in the race, except that the first car to Paris would win the prize of a magnum of Mumm champagne. The race went without any assistance through countryside where there were no roads or roadmaps. For the race, camels carrying fuel left Peking and set up at stations along the route, to provide fuel for the racers. The race followed a telegraph route, so that the race was well covered in newspapers at the time. Each car had one journalist as a passenger, with the journalists sending stories from the telegraph stations regularly throughout the race.

- Description: Joseph Pearson joined the Sydney Wanderers cyclists' club in 1882, participating in various races and covering long distances up to Melbourne. He meticulously recorded the stages, routes, the condition of the roads traveled, and refreshment options. Over six years, he covered about 12'000 miles (19'300 km) with a velocipede. In 1893, he ventured onto the roads of Great Britain and the old continent, totaling 3'500 miles (5'633 km). Drawing from the maps purchased in Europe, in 1896 he published the Cyclists' Touring Guide of New South Wales. Several other publications (maps and guides) followed, which became indispensable companions for cyclists or moped riders for decades

Their travels are documented in several books, including A Canterbury Pilgrimage (1885), an illustrated travelogue describing their bicycle journey from London to Canterbury, following the route of the pilgrims in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The book combines personal narrative with descriptions of the English countryside, architecture, and the people encountered along the way, offering a late nineteenth-century perspective on a historic route
