- Description: George Adams Wyman was the first person to make a transcontinental crossing of the United States by motor vehicle. In 1903, he covered some 6,100 km (3,800 miles) in 51 days, departing San Francisco on May 16 and arriving in New York City on July 6. He rode a motorized bicycle fitted with a 200 cc engine, frequently following railroad tracks and tackling rough terrain along with improvised repairs. The 1908 New York to Paris Race was an automobile competition consisting of drivers attempting to travel from New York to Paris. This was a considerable challenge given the state of automobile technology and road infrastructure at the time. Only three of six contestants completed the course. The winner was the American team, driving a 1907 Thomas Flyer.
