- Description: Thomas Stevens is considered the first man to have completed a round-the-world journey by bicycle, between 1884 and 1887. He left San Francisco on April 22, 1884, heading east, initially following the Central Pacific Railroad to Ogden, Utah, and then continuing along the Union Pacific. He reached Chicago on July 4, 1884, and completed the North American leg in Boston. After crossing the Atlantic, he landed in Liverpool and began his journey across Europe, passing through England, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Balkans, arriving in Istanbul. From there, after a stop in Asia Minor, he embarked for India, where he cycled across much of the subcontinent as far as Calcutta. Stevens then continued toward East Asia, but was forced to abandon the route in China due to political instability and logistical challenges. He redirected to Japan, where he completed the final leg of his trip before returning to the United States in January 1887. His journey, first reported in magazines such as Outing and later published in the book Around the World on a Bicycle (1887)

He is of medium height (5'5") and well built (about 140 pounds), he has a very pleasing manner. He is naturally the fairest of blondes, but so thoroughly have the sun and the wind done their work that, were it not for his light moustache, his face would be taken for anything rather than a white man's. He is an Englishman by birth, and is about 29 years of age.

- Description: In 1911, Hermann Hesse embarked on a journey to Ceylon, Sumatra, and Malaysia in search of inner peace. However, he never managed to reach India (his main destination), which he only skirted due to dysentery and lack of money. He returned to Gaienhofen still sick and exhausted. Seeking to change this situation, in 1912, he and Maria decided to move to Bern. Unfortunately, even this new change did not benefit Hesse's health. Meanwhile, his son Martin fell ill, and in 1914, he was taken to a sanatorium. In 1913, Hesse had published his journal 'Fuori dall'India' about his journey to the Far East, followed by the novella Rosshalde

On September 6, 1911, Hermann Hesse boards the "Prinz Eitel Friedrich" in Genoa in the company of his friend, the painter Hans Sturzenegger, to travel to India, the country in which his grandparents, his father and his mother worked as missionaries. In actual fact, however, it turns out to be a trip not to India but to Indonesia: Penang, Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo, and Burma.

Walter Stolle's Bicycle Saga, or Around the World in 18 Years. When he was a teenager, Walter Stolle got a crazy idea. “I decided,” he recalls, “that I would make the longest journey ever on a bike.” He did. It covered 400,000 miles—the equivalent of 16 trips around the world—took him to 159 countries and lasted 18 years.
