  • Description: According to Gazzetta Ticinese (May 24, 1924), engineer Fibinger (whose name may also appear as Fiebinger) was described as a globe-trotter attempting a round-the-world journey on foot. He set out from San Francisco in 1908 and reached the Dardanelles, where he took part in the First World War by enlisting with the Central Powers. He remained there for four years, suffering several wounds. After resuming his walk, he endured another accident in Tyrol, where he was buried for several hours under an avalanche, an incident confirmed by the Austrian police. By the time he reached Lugano, he claimed to have walked about 68,000 km (42,250 miles), and planned to continue via Chiasso to Genoa. He aimed to return to San Francisco within two and a half years in order to win a 40,000-dollar wager with a Californian club, which required him to complete the journey by December 1928

  • Description: Elzéar Duquette was a Canadian long-distance walker, nicknamed the “King of the Walk.” For more than forty years, he covered thousands of kilometres on foot across Canada and beyond. Between 1969 and 1976 he undertook round trips from Montreal to Vancouver, Tokyo, and Paris, covering more than 37,000 km (23,000 miles). He travelled with a small cart, which he called his “coffin,” using it both to sleep in and to carry his belongings. He supported himself by selling souvenirs and through television appearances, becoming a well-known popular figure in Quebec during the 1970s

  • Description: According to Libera Stampa (January 7, 1924), Antonio Federico Hauptmann, born in Brunico and with his mother living in Innsbruck, was described as a globe-trotter. He declared that he had begun his world journey in America, where he also claimed to have taken U.S. citizenship, before traveling across Europe and visiting numerous countries while collecting autographs. Later, he ventured into North Africa. From Tripoli he moved towards Misurata, but after straying into the interior he was captured by Arab rebels. Freed during the Italian advance at Seddada, he was flown to Tripoli along with other civilian prisoners

Having crossed France, the Mont Cenis pass, and the cities of Turin and Milan, he arrived in Lugano’s main square, where his eccentric yet cheerful appearance attracted attention.   • Description: Luigi Pasta, from Turin and a member of the Turin Walking Society, undertook to walk around Italy while pushing a wheelbarrow. The planned route was about 3,000 km (1,860 miles). Globe-trotter ne abbiamo visti e ne vediamo tutti i giorni: sportsmen che fanno chi il giro del mondo in aeroplano, chi in auto e chi anche, più comodamente, in un lussuoso yacht. Ma fare il giro d’Italia a piedi spingendo una carriola e guadagnandosi il vitto — non diciamo l’alloggio, perché nell’estate l’albergo della luna o quello delle stelle è sempre gratuito — non è cosa troppo comune né tanto facile.
