- Description: Characters created by Emilio Salgari in the adventure novel "A Challenge at the Pole," first published in 1909. The story tells of two wealthy protagonists, Master Torpon and Gastone di Montcalm, the former American and the latter Canadian, both wishing to marry the same woman: Ellen Perkins. Since she cannot decide whom to marry, the two suitors challenged each other in countless competitions. Since all matches end in a tie, Gastone di Montcalm decides to issue a final challenge: the first of the two to reach the North Pole will win Ellen's hand. In the end, after Gastone's return to Canada and Torpon's death at the Pole, Ellen Perkins arrives at Gastone's house to marry him. However, Gastone tells her: "Well, Miss, to that victory to which your hand was pledged, I hereby renounce. Women who demand victims and seek to drive men to kill themselves in risky enterprises have never been fortunate in Canada. Miss, find yourself a husband among your countrymen." Naturally, the woman left in a huff, but Gastone did not care
