  • Description: George Loher traveled the route from Oakland (California) to New York by bicycle. Departing on August 11, 1895, he decided to take an alternative route compared to those taken by his peers. He followed the Pacific coast to Portland, then headed East towards Idaho, Montana, and Dakota before reaching Chicago. He entered New York on October 30, and as reported by the San Francisco Call on December 17, 1895, "The cyclist traveled over 4'350 miles of roads, trails, and deserts, and has no intention of repeating the journey"

  • Description: According to the Gazzetta Ticinese of July 1, 1906, Émile Lonjumeau de Otandidier, described as a "professional globe-trotter,” passed through Lugano during a walking journey from Paris. Having crossed France, the Mont Cenis pass, and the cities of Turin and Milan, he arrived in Lugano’s main square, where his eccentric yet cheerful appearance attracted attention. Unlike other travellers, he declared that he journeyed without a female companion and was content with his solitude. His journey was reportedly motivated by a wager requiring him to return to Paris on foot within a certain period, though the newspaper declined to specify the exact time limit. The account also remarked that, unlike many globe-trotters of the era, he asked for no money from the editors, which earned him the description of a “respectable” traveller

  • Description: Donald George Mackay, inspired by Arthur Richardson and accompanied by Frank White, embarked on a journey around the perimeter of the Australian continent in 1899. Starting from Brisbane on July 30, 1899, Mackay completed the journey back to Brisbane on March 25, 1900.
