Die Geschichte erzählt von den Abenteuern von Phileas Fogg, einem wohlhabenden Londoner Gentleman, der als gewohnheitsliebend, sesshaft und zurückhaltend beschrieben wird. Am 2. Oktober 1872 verlässt Fogg seine Residenz in der Savile Row und begibt sich, wie jeden Tag, zum Reform Club. Punkt halb zwölf erreicht er den Club, nachdem er exakt 575 Schritte gemacht hat.
