En 1872, Jules Verne publie un roman qui, plus de 140 ans après sa première édition, demeure connu et apprécié pour sa puissance évocatrice: Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours. Le récit retrace les aventures de Phileas Fogg, un riche gentleman londonien, homme de routine, sédentaire et réservé. Le 2 octobre 1872, Fogg quitte sa résidence de Saville Row et se rend comme à son habitude au Reform Club. Comme chaque jour, il arrive au club à onze heures et demie, après avoir parcouru exactement 575 pas.
