The volume Globetrotters. A Repertory of World Travelers, 1850–1945 has recently been released. The catalogue is dedicated to men and women who circumnavigated the globe between the mid-nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Available in both Italian and English, the book brings together more than 600 micro-stories, documenting the emergence of the modern globetrotter through short biographies, historical sources and ephemeral materials.
The volume is the result of more than twenty years of research conducted in libraries, archives, private collections and digitized repositories. The repertory is part of the documentation and research activities carried out by the Museum of Travel and Tourism, an online archive dedicated to the history of travel and mobility.
As Roland Hochstrasser, author of the research, explains, “this repertory was conceived to restore visibility to a constellation of often overlooked travelers whose stories reveal the origins of modern travel. It is not about celebrating heroic exploits, but about understanding how travel gradually became a social practice, a shared imaginary and, ultimately, a global industry. Reading these micro-stories invites us to reflect on the very meaning of moving through the world, then as now.”
