When Kaikee Kharas, Rustam Ghandhi and Rutton Shroff were lost in the snow-clad mountains of Afghanistan in the mid 1930s on a nine-year cycling expedition around the world, they knocked on the door of a shepherd asking for food and shelter. The herdsman shared his humble meal with them and provided them place to sleep in, but was nowhere to be seen next morning. When the trio went looking for him in the snowy wastes, they found him deep in slumber and nearly dead. They had to rub his limbs and revive him.

- Description: Kevin Kelly began traveling in the 1970s, leaving university to explore Asia with little money and a camera. He journeyed through countries like Iran, India, Thailand, and Japan, documenting traditional cultures in rapid transformation and collecting tens of thousands of slides. Upon returning to the United States, he crossed the country by bicycle, riding over 8'000 kilometers and keeping a travel journal with sketches. For nearly fifty years, he continued returning to Asia, building a vast photographic archive that led to the creation of Vanishing Asia, a project dedicated to capturing practices, places, and faces on the verge of disappearing

For most of my life I owned very little. I dropped out of college and for almost a decade wandered remote parts of Asia in cheap sneakers and worn jeans, with lots of time and no money. The cities I knew best were steeped in medieval richness; the lands I passed through were governed by ancient agricultural traditions. When I reached for a physical object, it was almost surely made of wood, fiber, or stone. I ate with my hands, trekked on foot through mountain valleys, and slept wherever. I carried very little stuff. My personal possessions totaled a sleeping bag, a change of clothes, a penknife, and some cameras. Living close to the land, I experienced the immediacy that opens up when the buffer of technology is removed. I got colder often, hotter more frequently, soaking wet a lot, bitten by insects faster, and synchronized quicker to the rhythm of the day and seasons. Time seemed abundant. After eight years in Asia, I returned to the United States. I sold what little I had and bought an inexpensive bicycle, which I rode on a 5,000-mile meander across the American continent, west to east.

- Description: Jack Kerouac's travels, particularly in his famous book 'On the Road', have become an icon of the Beat Generation literary movement. Through the adventures of Sal Paradise (Kerouac's alter ego) and his friend Dean Moriarty (based on the real Neal Cassady), the novel tells of road trips across the United States. The characters explore American culture in the 1950s, seeking authentic experiences and a path to spiritual enlightenment. The book captures the essence of travel as a quest for freedom, authenticity, and a sense of belonging

The two main characters of the book are the narrator, Sal Paradise, and his friend Dean Moriarty, much admired for his carefree attitude and sense of adventure, a free-spirited maverick eager to explore all kicks and an inspiration and catalyst for Sal's travels. The novel contains five parts, three of them describing road trips with Dean. The narrative takes place in the years 1947 to 1950, is full of Americana, and marks a specific era in jazz history, "somewhere between its Charlie Parker Ornithology period and another period that began with Miles Davis" (Pt. 1, Ch. 3). The novel is largely autobiographical, Sal being the alter ego of the author and Dean standing for Neal Cassady. Like Kerouac, Sal Paradise is a writer who published two books over the course of the plot, even though the names are not known.

- Description: Mary Henrietta Kingsley was a British explorer and writer who defied social conventions and gender stereotypes to travel through West Africa in the late 19th century. The daughter of a doctor, she set off on her own after her parents’ deaths in 1892, venturing into then little-known regions of Gabon, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon. She paddled canoes up rivers, sailed on small trading vessels, and trekked through rainforests, collecting specimens for the British Museum. Her book Travels in West Africa (1897) blends ethnographic observation, wit, and an independent spirit. She died in 1900 in South Africa, where she had volunteered as a nurse during the Second Boer War

- Description: In 2011, after covering 60'000 km across 3 continents and 38 countries in 14 months, setting a Guinness World Record for the longest journey by quad bike (four-wheeled motorcycles), two Australians crossed the finish line in Sydney, in tribute to their teammate who tragically died mid-journey. Jamie Kenyon, 25, and Kristopher Teddy Davant, 27, known as the "Expedition Quad Squad," crossed the bay bridge on their vehicles, escorted by police and hundreds of motorcyclists, in the final leg of a journey that began in Istanbul. The duo had almost given up after the death of their companion, 24-year-old Italian Valerio De Simoni, whose bike was struck by an out-of-control car in Malawi. In addition to breaking the previous record of 27'141 km, the Quad Squad used their adventure to support the NGO Oxfam and raised the equivalent of about 40'000 euros for the fight against poverty

- Description: In November 1963, Ken Kesey traveled to New York City with his wife Faye and George Walker to attend the Broadway opening of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," based on his 1962 novel. During the trip, he visited the construction site of the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 1964, Kesey had to return to New York for the publication party of his novel "Sometimes a Great Notion" and planned to visit the Fair. This plan evolved into an ambitious expedition with a group of friends, inspired by Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road." As more people joined the trip, the group outgrew Kesey's car, so he bought an old yellow school bus for $1'250. The bus, originally equipped for the seller's family vacations, was further customized by the Pranksters with a generator, a sound system, a rooftop platform, and an observation turret. The bus was painted in psychedelic colors and named "Furthur" by artist Roy Sebern, as inspiration to keep going despite difficulties. The bus's last journey was to the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Afterwards, it was used on Kesey's farm in Oregon until 1983, when it was abandoned in a swamp. Eventually, it was recovered and stored in a farm warehouse
