- Description: In February 1912, the Hawaiian Star reported on Conrad Greer Fry, born in Santa Barbara on April 21, 1910, described as the “baby globetrotter”. Son of J. S. Fry of the British chocolate-making family J. S. Fry & Sons of Bristol, by the age of twenty-one months he had already traveled 72,000 km (45,000 miles). Milestones included cutting his first tooth on the China Sea, learning to creep in Colombo (Ceylon), speaking his first words in Calcutta, and taking his first steps in England. After time spent in California, in 1912 the family boarded the Japanese liner Tenyo Maru, bound for the Orient and then England, to be home in time for the child’s second birthday

- Description: Fukushima was a Japanese army officer who, after the Russo-Japanese war in 1904, chose a remarkable way to return to Japan: riding from Berlin to Vladivostok. This epic crossing of two continents on horseback took one year and four months. One of the journey's objectives was to inspect the construction of the still-under-construction Trans-Siberian Railway and to gather information on local infrastructure, command, and control along the way. During this journey, on March 1, 1893, before entering Manchuria, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. His 14'000-kilometer ride made him a national hero in Japan and earned him the Order of the Sacred Treasures, third class. Upon his return to Japan from his ride across Asia, Fukushima donated his horses to Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, where they quickly became famous tourist attractions

- Description: Yves Gallot, nicknamed "the King of Walkers", undertook numerous walking adventures, such as his 817 laps around Darcy Square in Dijon or the journey from Lyon to Paris. His exploits, rifle in tow, often graced the front pages of newspapers. Among his most notable adventures, he covered 2'000 km in twenty-eight days, and then 2'421 km by circling Paris 62 times. He also challenged a horse rider in an endurance race, winning after covering 278.2 km. In his "Art of Walking", Gallot shares useful advice on the most appropriate walking technique ("never keep any part of the body stiff"), clothing, balms, diet, and beverages. He noted that if the army followed his principles, soldiers would be expert walkers. Gallot also recounts how he was introduced to walking by the Native Americans of North America, where he had arrived to get as far away as possible from a tyrannical and violent father

- Description: Sir Francis Galton was an English explorer, anthropologist, and scholar, known for his expedition to Southwest Africa between 1850 and 1852, during which he crossed little-known regions using camels and river boats. The account of this journey, Narrative of an Explorer in Tropical South Africa, earned him the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. After returning to England, marked by the difficulties encountered during the expedition, Galton set out to pass on the skills he had acquired to travelers and soldiers. In 1855, he published The Art of Travel (London: John Murray, 1860), a manual devoted to survival and self-sufficiency in challenging environments, which was also used by explorers such as Sir Richard Francis Burton. The book brings together practical guidance on various topics, including finding water in the desert, handling pack animals, avoiding snake-related risks, and treating injuries. It also includes instructions on organizing an African expedition, riding horses, managing elephants, extracting teeth, and constructing a sleeping bag from fur. The text also contains passages reflecting the cultural context of the time, including references to the management of porters. Illustrated with nineteenth-century drawings, the book is a useful source for the history of exploration and travel practices
