- Description: Characters created by Emilio Salgari in the adventure novel "Al Polo Australe," set in Antarctica at the end of the 19th century. The story begins in Baltimore: at the geographical society's club, there is a discussion about the shipwreck of an exploration ship, the Eira. A dispute arises between Wilkye and Linderman about the best way to reach the South Pole: the former proposes using bicycles, the latter suggests using a ship to navigate through open passages in the ice and then continue on foot. The two organize two separate expeditions, reviving the theme of challenge already present in many novels of the genre. Both crews set sail on the same ship, the Stella Polare. Upon arriving at Graham Land, the Stella Polare disembarks Wilkye's crew and sets off again in search of a passage to reach the vicinity of the Pole. Wilkye sets out with the two brave cyclists, Ugo Peruschi and John Blunt, towards the Pole using a special machine consisting of three bicycles linked together propelled by a petrol engine. Not without difficulties, they will be the first to reach the Pole, but they will be forced into a strenuous return journey, full of unexpected events

La storia comincia a Baltimora, il 26 ottobre 1892. Al circolo della società geografica si discute del naufragio di una nave per esplorazioni, l'Eira. Tra due membri, lo statunitense Wilkye, appassionato di velocipedi, e l'armatore inglese Linderman, nasce una disputa sul modo migliore per raggiungere il Polo Sud: il primo sostiene che lo si può fare in bicicletta, il secondo che è indispensabile una nave per infilarsi in qualche passaggio aperto tra i ghiacci e proseguire eventualmente a piedi. I due decidono così di organizzare due diverse spedizioni, in una sfida tra Stati Uniti d'America e Regno Unito.
