Fleming Peter (w3029)

  • Description: Lieutenant Colonel Robert Peter Fleming (1907–1971) was a British adventurer, journalist, soldier, and travel writer, also known as the elder brother of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. The son of Valentine Fleming, a lawyer and Member of Parliament, Peter was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he excelled both academically and as a contributor to the Eton College Chronicle. Peter's adventurous spirit led him in 1932 to join an expedition to Brazil in response to an advertisement in The Times, seeking the missing Colonel Percy Fawcett. Despite challenges and disagreements within the group, Fleming’s journey through Brazil was eventful, culminating in a race to be the first to report back home. His experiences were recounted in his popular book Brazilian Adventure. Fleming’s travels extended to Asia, where he journeyed from Moscow to Beijing, crossing diverse landscapes and interviewing prominent figures. His observations—at times critical of the places he visited—were detailed in his books One’s Company and News from Tartary

He travelled widely in far places;
Wrote, and was widely read.
Soldiered, saw some of danger's faces,
Came home to Nettlebed.

The squire lies here, his journeys ended –
Dust, and a name on a stone –
Content, amid the lands he tended,
To keep this rendezvous alone.
