Longest Solo or Duo Walks

Solo and duo walks represent the purest form of long-distance walking adventure, where one or two people undertake extraordinary journeys across continents. These epic walks often span years and cover tens of thousands of miles, driven by personal quests, social causes, or the simple human desire to explore the world on foot.

Avdhesh Sharma (Indian, April 21, 2021 – August 26, 2021): Walked 2,600 miles from Ladakh to Kanyakumari in the L2K Hike. First person to hike from Thang, Ladakh (northernmost village in India) to Cape Comorin, spreading awareness for RGBforLife.

Chris Lewis (British, August 1, 2017 – July 30, 2023): Walked 19,894 miles around the entire UK coastline in just under 6 years. Former paratrooper facing mental health issues who raised over £500,000 for Armed Forces charity SSAFA, accompanied by his greyhound Jet.

David Kunst (American, June 1970 – October 1974): With brother John, walked 14,450 miles from Minnesota through Europe. After John was killed by bandits in Afghanistan, David continued with brother Peter. First verified circumnavigation of the planet on foot.

George Meegan (British, January 1977 – September 1983): Hiked 19,019 miles from Tierra del Fuego to northernmost Alaska as a "celebration of freedom." Married Yoshiko Matsumoto of Japan during the journey, who accompanied him on parts of the walk.

Jean Béliveau (Canadian, August 2000 – October 2011): Covered 46,600 miles through 64 countries, wearing out 49 pairs of shoes. Met four Nobel Peace Prize winners including Nelson Mandela. Raised awareness for children suffering from violence.

Konstantin Konstantinovich Rengarten (Russian, August 1894 – September 1898): Covered 16,700 miles in what many consider the first true walk around the world. Starting from Riga through South Russia, Iran, Armenia, Siberia, Mongolia, Japan, US, France and Germany.

Louis Michael Figueroa (American, January 2005 – June 2005, June 2010 – January 2011): Walked 7,500 miles for victims of child abuse. Previously ran across country in 60 days (1982) for cancer victims and walked for AIDS victims (1996).

Nacho Dean (Ignacio Dean Mouliaá) (Spanish, March 2013 – March 2016): Walked 20,505 miles across several continents for environmental awareness. Traveled through 31 countries, surviving violent attacks in Mexico, Peru and El Salvador.

Nicolò Guarrera (Italian, August 2020 – ongoing): Walking around the world covering over 19,000 miles as of January 2025. Has walked across Western Europe, South America, Australia, India, Arabian peninsula, Iran, and Turkey, pushing stroller named "Ezio."

Pablo Nemo (Spanish, November 2021 – January 2024): Walked 9,300 miles across Africa from Cape Town to Cairo alone and unassisted through 11 countries. Named Tourism Ambassador of Zanzibar and received Medal of Honor from National Youth Council in Egypt.

Peace Pilgrim (Mildred Norman) (American, January 1953 – July 1981): Walked continuously 43,500 miles back and forth across US for 28 years until her death. Made statement against militarism during Korean War. Wore out 29 pairs of sneakers.

Prem Kumar (Indian, October 1982 – August 1986): Walked 10,500 miles to raise awareness for peace and development in poorer countries, then organized international walks in India.

Robert Garside (British, October 1997 – June 2003): Ran 29,826 miles around the world, cited by Guinness World Records as first person to run around the world. Started in India, jogged through Tibet, China, Japan, Australia, South America, Mexico, US, Africa, Turkey and back to India.

Rick Hansen (Canadian, March 1985 – May 1987): Wheeled 24,900 miles through 34 countries on four continents in wheelchair. Wheeled on Great Wall of China and met Pope John Paul II. Project raised $26 million for spinal cord injury research.

Sergey Lukyanov (Russian, April 2015 – February 2017): Walked 20,000 miles around the world unaccompanied, visiting 25 countries and 4 continents. Wore out 10 pairs of sneakers and almost 100 pairs of socks, turned 60 during the walk.

Shihab Chottur (Indian, June 2022 – May 2023): Walked 5,368 miles from Kerala, India to Makkah, Saudi Arabia covering over 8,600 kilometers to perform Haj pilgrimage.

Steven M. Newman (American, April 1983 – April 1987): Walked 15,509 miles across 21 countries over four years. Motivated by urge to find out if the world was "really such a terrible place." Despite arrests and attacks, concluded it was not.

Tony Mangan (Irish, October 2010 – October 2014): Ran 31,069 miles through North America, Central and South America, Australia, Asia and Europe, raising funds for charity battling depression. Ran with stroller named "Nirvana."
