- Description: Nellie Bly began her career as a journalist at the Pittsburgh Dispatch, adopting her pseudonym from a character in a famous song by Stephen Foster. After moving to New York, she continued her journalism career at Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. In 1888, Bly suggested to her editor the idea of turning the fiction of "Around the World in 80 Days" into reality. On November 14, 1889, at 9:40 am, Nellie Bly departed from New York to undertake her own journey around the world, revisiting Jules Verne's idea. The reporter traveled 24'899 miles in seventy-two days, six hours, eleven minutes, and fourteen seconds, returning to New York on January 25, 1890, and setting a new record for circumnavigation. This record was short-lived, later improved by George Francis Train, who completed the journey in sixty-seven days. Elizabeth Jane Cochran, while not the first woman to accomplish such a feat, was the first to do so in this manner, becoming a role model for women seeking emancipation
