- Description: William Francis Ainsworth was a British physician, geographer, and explorer active in the Near East during the mid-nineteenth century. He took part in the Euphrates Expedition (1835–1837), organized to assess the river’s navigability as a potential communication route between the Mediterranean and British India. Traveling through Anatolia and Mesopotamia, Ainsworth recorded geographical, geological, and archaeological observations later published in Researches in Assyria, Babylonia and Chaldaea (1838) and Travels and Researches in Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, Chaldea and Armenia (1842). His work contributed to early Western knowledge of the region
