Retired funeral director Jim Ogland pedaled through Salt Lake City this week during his revival of the first cross-continent bicycle ride, undertaken by outdoor magazine writer Thomas Stevens in 1884.

Ogland flew from his home in Minnesota to San Francisco, where he dipped the rubber tire of his high-wheel bicycle, an 1887-model Victor Light Roadster, in the Pacific Ocean near the Golden Gate Bridge April 22 and then headed east. He hopes to dip the same wheel in the Atlantic in Boston around June 11. Stevens also started on April 22, Ogland said, but his trip took 103 days. The trip took longer because Stevens couldn't pedal along the shoulder of I-80 most of the way.
